2 Digit Addition Worksheets Without Regrouping

Keep tens with tens and ones with ones. These two-digit additions stay within 100 and do not require carrying a new ten.

Why do we line up the digits?

Ben has 23 stickers and gets 14 more. He can see that the two numbers should be added, but he writes the second number one space to the left. Now the tens and ones no longer sit in the same columns.

23: 2 tens and 3 ones.

14: 1 ten and 4 ones.

20 + 10 = 30
3 + 4 = 7
30 + 7 = 37

The columns tell us the value of each digit. The 2 in 23 means twenty, not two. Adding it to the 1 in the tens column means adding twenty and ten to make thirty. The ones can then be added without exchanging any for another ten.

Connect the picture to the written method

  1. Represent each number with bundles of ten and single objects.
  2. Combine the ones: three ones and four ones make seven ones.
  3. Combine the tens: two tens and one ten make three tens.
  4. Write 37, with 3 in the tens position and 7 in the ones position.
If the child writes 307: they may understand the two partial sums but be joining their written forms. Ask them to write the number that has three tens and seven ones. Thirty plus seven is 37, not the digits 30 followed by 7.

When is this the right worksheet?

Use it when the child can identify tens and ones but needs practice aligning the columns. Every problem has fewer than ten ones in the combined ones column. This lets the child concentrate on place value before learning to exchange ten ones for a ten.

The worksheet leaves room above the numbers for notes, but a carry mark is not needed in this set. Encourage the child to explain the value of a digit rather than only reciting its name.

Ask whether the answer is sensible: 23 + 14 must be greater than 23. If a child keeps mixing the columns, draw a light dividing line between tens and ones for one example, then let them try the next independently. The answer key gives the total; a correct expanded-form explanation is useful evidence of understanding.
