How to teach it
Build each quantity with tens rods. Match adding or removing rods to the action in the story.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
5 tens − 2 tens = 3 tens
50 − 20 = 30 counters
Each complete rod stands for ten counters. Cross out two whole rods, not two small sections.
Ask your student
If three rods remain, how many individual counters is that?
If your student needs help
If the student answers three instead of thirty, ask them to name the unit each rod represents.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask how many tens changed and how many counters that represents. For subtraction, put the removed tens back to check the starting quantity.
