How to teach it
Ask the student to sketch what happens to the collection. Once the equation matches the story, support the calculation with tens and ones.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
First collection: 38 counters.
New counters: 27.
38 + 27 = 65
38 + 20 = 58, then 58 + 7 = 65.
52 − 10 = 42
42 − 8 = 34
34 + 18 = 52
The last equation checks that the remaining counters and the given-away counters rebuild the starting collection.

What happened to the starting collection?
If your student needs help
If the equation is right but the calculation is wrong, work on the place-value step without changing the student's model of the story.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask for one addition check and one subtraction check. A correct answer should fit the story as well as the arithmetic. If the child is secure with the relationship but needs more calculation practice, choose the relevant regrouping worksheet below.
