How to teach it
Combine two collections of tens and ones. When the ones total ten or more, make a new ten and record it in the tens column.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
36: 3 tens and 6 ones.
27: 2 tens and 7 ones.
6 + 7 = 13 ones
13 ones = 1 ten + 3 ones
3 tens + 2 tens + 1 ten = 6 tens
36 + 27 = 63

Where did the extra ten come from?
If your student needs help
If the student forgets the new ten, have them match each written digit to the blocks.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask the child to point to the new ten in one completed problem and explain its value. Check a result by subtracting one addend from the total. The answer key shows final totals; it does not judge a particular mental or written strategy.
