How to teach it
Invite the student to look for convenient pairs, then record the intermediate sums. Keep all four original addends visible.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.

70 + 50 = 120 counters
The subtotals cover all four boxes. Do not add the original counts again after combining the subtotals.

If your student needs help
If an addend is used twice or left out, mark each one as it is included.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask which box each number represents and how the child checked that every box was counted once. Compare a second grouping before using the answer key.
