How to teach it
Put out a small collection and act out adding or taking away. Write the equation after the student has described what happened.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
2 + 1 = 3
Two objects, one more object, three objects altogether. The plus sign connects the groups; the equals sign says that both sides describe the same total.
5 − 2 = 3
Start with five, remove two, and count only the three that remain. Put the two back to check that the starting group had five.

If your student needs help
If the student focuses only on the new or removed objects, point to the collection that the question asks about.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Invite the child to explain one choice with objects, pointing, or a drawing. Offer help recording the answer when needed. Choose another activity when the child is ready for a different way to use the same quantities.
