Use matching pairs to compare groups without relying on spacing.

How to teach it
Line up the groups so each object can have a partner. Compare the leftovers, then spread one group out without changing its count.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
Group A: three counters.
Group B: six counters.
Make three pairs. All of Group A has partners, but three counters in Group B remain unmatched. Group B has more counters.
Ask your student
Did moving the objects change how many there are?
If your student needs help
If a wider row seems larger, match the objects again in pairs.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Invite the child to explain one choice with objects, pointing, or a drawing. Offer help recording the answer when needed. Choose another activity when the child is ready for a different way to use the same quantities.
