How to teach it
Sketch the warehouse's starting cable supply and the amount received or shipped. After choosing an equation, model place-value alignment.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
Stored: 248,650 feet. Received: 175,480 feet.
248,650 + 175,480 = 424,130
The warehouse now has 424,130 feet of cable.
500,000 − 176,450 = 323,550
Check: 323,550 + 176,450 = 500,000.

Does the answer describe cable received, cable shipped, or cable remaining?
If your student needs help
If the student gets lost in the digits, use a smaller example of the same situation before returning to the problem.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask the child to explain what each number in one equation represents. If choosing the operation is difficult, use the within-1,000 stories first. If the operation is correct, focus feedback on the specific place-value exchange that needs attention.
