How to teach it
Start with a shaded fraction strip and remove the required pieces. Name the remaining pieces without changing their size.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.

5/8 − 2/8 = 3/8
Ask your student
Are these pieces still eighths after we take some away?
If your student needs help
If the student subtracts denominators, point to the equal divisions of the whole strip.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask the child to check a difference by adding back the fraction that was removed. For example, 3/8 + 2/8 should return 5/8. When a written answer differs from the key, check equivalence before treating it as a mistake.
