Fractions on a Number Line Worksheets

A fraction names a number on the line. Use the distance from 0 to 1 as one whole, then count equal intervals to locate the marked point.

Count intervals, not tick marks

The distance from 0 to 1 is one whole. If that distance is divided into four equal intervals, each interval is one fourth. A point three intervals from 0 is at 3/4.

Use the endpoints first

Find 0 and 1. The distance between them is the whole.
Count the equal intervals between 0 and 1 for the denominator.
Count intervals from 0 to the point for the numerator.

Four intervals have five boundary marks. Counting the marks would give the wrong denominator. Move a finger through each gap instead of tapping each tick.

If the child begins counting at 1 on the zero tick: return to zero and make one jump to the next tick. One fourth is reached after one interval, not before moving.

Different fractions can mark the same location

A point four intervals along a line split into six equal intervals can be named 4/6 or 2/3. Both name the same number. The original answer key may simplify the fraction; accept an equivalent fraction that correctly identifies the point.

What this set covers

Six original number lines run from 0 to 1 and use 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8 equal intervals. Each point is strictly between the endpoints. The set does not include fractions greater than one, missing endpoints, or unequal scales. It supports reading fractions as numbers, not just counting shaded pieces.

Ask the child to name one interval before naming the marked point. Then explain why two equivalent fractions can occupy the same location. Use a shaded strip beside the line to connect the two models.
