How to teach it

Show two eighths and three eighths using strips of the same size. Combine the shaded parts and name the result as five eighths.

Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.

Ask your student

Did the size of each piece change when we put the pieces together?

If your student needs help

If the student adds the denominators, return to the strip and count its eight equal parts.

Make a practice set

Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.

After your student finishes

Compare equivalent values rather than the written form alone. For example, 6/8 and 3/4 name the same amount, although the instruction asks for the simplified form. If the child understands the sum but cannot simplify it, discuss common factors separately rather than reteaching the whole addition process.
