How to teach it

Use a strip to group equal small pieces into larger pieces. Connect the model to dividing both numerator and denominator by a common factor.

Ask your student

How can we tell that the amount has stayed the same?

If your student needs help

If only one part of the fraction is divided, compare the result with the original model.

Make a practice set

Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.

After your student finishes

Ask the child to explain why the original and simplified fractions are equal. A correct final fraction without that explanation may reflect a memorized rule. Rebuild the original fraction by multiplying both numbers by the same factor.
