How to teach it
Build the starting number, then remove the required ones and tens. Match each action to its column in the written calculation.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
Start with 58: 5 tens and 8 ones.
Remove 23: 2 tens and 3 ones.
8 − 3 = 5 ones
5 − 2 = 3 tens
58 − 23 = 35
Ask your student
Why can we subtract the ones without exchanging a ten?
If your student needs help
If the student subtracts mismatched places, have them label each column and rebuild the number.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Check one subtraction with addition: 35 + 23 = 58. If the child understands place value and consistently keeps the columns aligned, move to the regrouping worksheet. That next set adds one new idea—exchanging a ten—while retaining the same meaning of subtraction.
