How to teach it

Represent the two amounts on a common scale. Identify the unmatched portion before subtracting, and choose an appropriate number range.

Ask your student

Are we finding a total or the gap between two totals?

If your student needs help

If the student adds both amounts, use a smaller comparison with the same structure first.

Choosing and using the worksheet

Each set contains four distinct comparisons. Both given amounts are at least 100 and no greater than 1,000, and the larger amount is strictly greater than the smaller. Equal amounts and zero amounts are not included. The selected source does not cover every possible pair or guarantee a particular mix of regrouping and no-regrouping questions.

Make a practice set

Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.

Print materials

After your student finishes

Ask the child to name both amounts and explain what the difference measures. Check that the smaller amount plus the difference equals the larger amount.
