How to teach it
Put out seven counters and remove three. Connect the four remaining counters to 7 − 3 = 4 before modeling counting back.

If the student counts the starting number as a backward step, model three actual moves from seven.
Choosing and using the worksheet
This set uses starting numbers from 1 to 10 and may subtract zero or the entire starting number. It does not contain negative answers or subtraction across ten. The space under each question can hold a small drawing or a number-line sketch.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Choose one answer to check by adding the amount taken away to the amount left: 4 + 3 = 7 checks 7 − 3 = 4. If mistakes happen only when zero appears, revisit the two zero examples rather than repeating every problem. Allow pictures while the child is building the meaning of subtraction.
