Math Word Problems Worksheets

Free printable math word problems for grades 1–6: school supplies, library books and bake sales. Choose a practice group and print the matching answer key.

Grades 1–2 practice totals up to 99; grades 3–4 use totals up to 199; grades 5–6 review addition and subtraction with totals up to 999. The older group is arithmetic and reading review, not a complete grade-level problem-solving course. Choose from six structures: unknown amounts, comparison, equations, useful information, diagrams, and explanations.

Model and choose operations in word problems

Tape Diagram Word Problems Worksheets: free printable activity

Free printable tape diagram word problems for grades 1–2. Model addition and subtraction stories, generate fresh numbers, and print the matching answer key.

Grades 1–2 · 1.OA.A.1; 2.OA.A.1. Tape diagrams, also called bar models, show how the quantities in a story are related. The same model supports joining, missing-part, and difference situations.

What students do

Read the question before choosing an operation. Label the whole and the two parts in the diagram, write an equation, and solve for the box. Select New problems whenever another version is useful. The activity keeps the same learning goal while the existing worksheet engine supplies a fresh set of numbers, pictures, or story details.

A practical teaching routine

Have the student point to the quantity being found. A larger number in the story is not always the answer, and the word “more” does not always mean that the required operation is addition. Begin with one example together, let the student complete the remaining questions independently, and ask for a short explanation of one answer. The explanation helps distinguish a lucky guess from an understood strategy.

Worksheet and matching answer key

Use the Worksheet and Answer key buttons to preview both versions. They use the exact same set, so every number, diagram, and question stays in the same position while the answers appear. The print choices let you print only the worksheet, only the answer key, or both. Save PDF uses the same selection.

Each selected sheet is designed to fit on one US Letter or A4 page. No account is required, and the printable may be used for home practice, tutoring, math centers, or ordinary classroom instruction. Keep the first session short, review any error, and make a new set on another day for spaced practice.
