How to teach it
Join the two ribbon lengths in a drawing, then mark the part cut off. Label the remaining length in the same unit.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
The green and orange lengths meet end to end. The dashed part is cut off and is not part of the remaining length. The drawing keeps the same scale in each row; it is not a ruler and is not printed at actual size.
7 + 5 = 12
The joined ribbon is 12 cm long.
12 − 3 = 9
The remaining ribbon is 9 cm long.

If your student needs help
If the diagram and equation disagree, rebuild the sequence of joining and cutting together.
Make a practice set
