How to teach it
Add or remove one tens rod while leaving the ones in place. Connect the action to the written result.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
10 less than 34 is 24.
10 more than 34 is 44.
Build 34 with three bundles of ten objects and four loose objects. Remove one bundle to show 24. Rebuild 34, then add one bundle to show 44.

If your student needs help
If the student relies on a digit shortcut across a hundred, model the necessary regrouping.
Choosing and using the worksheet
Each sheet contains three “ten more” and three “ten less” questions, alternating across six distinct prompts. Starting numbers range from 10 through 89, and answers range from 0 through 99. A set does not guarantee a zero answer or a starting number ending in zero.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask what changed and what stayed the same. Reverse the change to check the starting number.
