How to teach it
Bundle ten counters and place loose ones beside them. Connect the model to the two digits and to an expanded-form sum.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
23 = 20 + 3

If your student needs help
If the student counts each bundle as one object, open a bundle and count the ten ones inside.
Choosing and using the worksheet
Each set shows six distinct numerals from 10 through 99. Children write the tens value plus the ones value. The printable uses numerals rather than pictures of bundles; provide objects or base-ten blocks when the child still needs a physical model. A set does not guarantee a teen number or a zero ones digit.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Choose one answer and build it with groups of ten and loose ones. Ask whether rearranging the groups changes the total and let the child check by counting.
