How to teach it
Build both numbers with tens rods and ones. Compare the ones only if the number of tens matches.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
42 = 4 tens and 2 ones
37 = 3 tens and 7 ones
Use bundles of ten objects and loose ones to show the two amounts. Keep each bundle together while comparing the tens.
Ask your student
Could more ones outweigh a whole extra ten in these numbers?
If your student needs help
If the student focuses on the larger ones digit, line up the tens in both models.
Choosing and using the worksheet
Each set has six distinct ordered pairs. Both numbers in every pair are from 10 through 99. Write >, <, or = in each box, then use the space below to draw tens and ones or explain which place decided the comparison. An adult can record a spoken explanation if writing it would distract from comparing.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask which place decided each comparison. For an equal pair, check that both tens and ones match.
