How to teach it
Compare hundreds first, then tens and ones only when needed. Use a place-value chart to explain the first difference.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.

Ask your student
Do we need to compare the ones if the hundreds are different?
If your student needs help
If the student starts with the last digit, rebuild both numbers with hundreds, tens, and ones.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask the child to name the first different place and explain its value. For an equal pair, ask how they checked all three places. Correct signs are more useful when the child can justify them.
