How to teach it

Add or remove a tens rod or a hundreds flat. Show any regrouping instead of changing one digit mechanically.

Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.

If your student needs help

If a digit-only rule fails, rebuild the number and carry out the change with units.

Choosing and using the worksheet

Each sheet has four questions: one each for 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, and 100 less. Starting numbers range from 100 through 900, with answers from 0 through 1000. A particular set does not guarantee a regrouping case, zero, or 1000.

Make a practice set

Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.

After your student finishes

Ask which group changed and whether regrouping was needed. Reverse each change to check the original number.
