How to teach it
Build the number with hundreds, tens, and ones, then record the matching sum. Discuss a zero place explicitly.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
352 = 300 + 50 + 2
Three hundreds + five tens + two ones make the same 352.
Ask your student
What amount does this digit contribute to the number?
If your student needs help
If the student writes just the digit names, connect each digit to its group of units.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Choose one answer and ask what each term counts. Then cover the original numeral and rebuild it from the expanded form. Accept an explicit zero term even when the answer key omits it.
