How to teach it
Mark a starting corner and follow the boundary around the shape. Say one number for each straight edge.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
For these worksheets, a side means a straight boundary segment between neighboring corners. A triangle has 3 straight sides. The pictured square has 4. A circle has 0 straight sides, because its entire boundary is curved.
Choose a starting corner on a polygon. Trace one straight edge to the next corner and say “one.” Continue around the shape, counting each edge once. Stop when you return to the starting corner.

If your student needs help
If a side is counted twice, mark each edge after counting it.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask the child to trace each straight edge once. For a circle, accept the explanation “no straight sides” and record 0.
