How to teach it
Read the target shape name and discuss its sides and corners. Have the student mark each matching shape, then count the marked group.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
A collection might contain two circles, three triangles, and four squares. If the question asks for triangles, circle the three triangles and write 3. The circles and squares stay on the page, but they do not belong to the category being counted.
First name the kind of shape. Next mark every matching picture. Finally count only the marked pictures. Separating these actions helps a child keep track of both the sorting rule and the number.

If your student needs help
If color or size distracts the student, compare differently colored examples of the same shape.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Check both the marked shapes and their count. An adult may read the directions or record a spoken answer.
