How to teach it
Establish that counting begins at the left. Point to each position in order, then have the student select just the requested object.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
Touch the leftmost animal and say “first.” Move to the next and say “second,” then to the next and say “third.” Leave a finger on that one animal. It is the third animal even though six animals are in the whole line.
On this worksheet, “Circle the third picture” means draw one circle around the picture in position 3. It does not mean circle any three pictures.
Ask your student
Does third mean three objects or one object in a certain place?
If your student needs help
If several objects are circled, count positions together and stop on the requested one.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Check where the child started and which one picture was selected. Read the direction aloud when ordinal words are new.
