How to teach it
Use a chart to track each digit when multiplying or dividing by 10, 100, or 1,000. Name the value before and after.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
4.2 → 42 → 420 → 4,200
Each step multiplies the value by ten. Track the 4 from ones to tens, hundreds, and thousands.

How many times as large is this digit's value now?
If your student needs help
If the student adds or removes zeros indiscriminately, use a decimal example to check the shortcut.
Choosing and using the worksheet
Each set contains one multiplication and one division question for each of 10, 100, and 1,000. Original starting values range from 0.1 through 99.9, including whole numbers. Selected answers have at most three decimal places.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.

Choose one answer, name the value of a digit, and use the inverse operation to check it.
