A digit and its value are different answers

Look at 0.406. The digit in the hundredths place is 0. The 6 is in the thousandths place, even though it is the second nonzero digit. Count every position, including the zero.

0.406 = 4/10 + 0/100 + 6/1000

Start at the decimal point

  1. Locate the decimal point.
  2. Move one place right for tenths, two for hundredths, or three for thousandths.
  3. Write the digit in that position.

For 0.572, the hundredths digit is 7. Its value is 7/100, or 0.07. This worksheet asks for the digit, so the answer box should contain 7.

If the child writes 0.07: their place-value thinking may be correct. Ask whether the question wants the digit or the amount it represents. Do not treat those as the same request.

Why a zero still has a place

In 0.406, zero keeps the hundredths position between 4 tenths and 6 thousandths. Removing it produces 0.46, which is a different number. Have the child write each digit in a place-value chart before answering.

Explain one answer

Ask, “Why is 6 worth 0.006 in 0.406?” Six thousandths are six parts when one whole is divided into a thousand equal parts. Moving a digit one place to the left makes its value ten times as great.

What is in this set?

Six questions ask for a digit in the tenths, hundredths, or thousandths place of a three-place decimal from 0.101 through 0.999. The original problem bank supplies the numbers and answers. The set may repeat a requested place; it does not guarantee all three places in every set. It does not assess rounding, expanded notation, or whole-number places.
