Rounding Decimals Worksheets: Whole Numbers and Tenths

Read the requested place, then decide which neighboring whole number or tenth is closer.

Choose the neighboring values

To round 6.37 to the nearest tenth, compare 6.3 and 6.4. The distances are 0.07 and 0.03, so choose 6.4. To round the same number to a whole number, compare 6 and 7 and choose 6.

Exactly halfway

4.05 is halfway between 4.0 and 4.1. For this activity, choose the greater value, 4.1. Likewise, 7.5 rounds to 8 to the nearest whole number.

If the child ignores a zero: write 4.0 as 4.00 and 4.1 as 4.10. The midpoint 4.05 is five hundredths from each. The zero holds a place; it is not permission to skip that digit.

A rounded answer can cross a whole number

13.95 rounds to 14.0 to the nearest tenth. The key may show 14, which has the same value. Ask the child to explain that 14.0 names fourteen and zero tenths.

Round directly to the requested place

6.49 rounds to 6 to the nearest whole number. Do not first round it to 6.5 and then to 7. That changes the original distance comparison.

A value already at the requested place stays the same

For 8.2 to the nearest tenth, the answer is 8.2. Adding a zero to write 8.20 does not change the number. The number of printed decimal digits does not decide its size.

Connect the digit rule to distance

For a whole-number answer, compare the decimal part with 0.5. For a tenth, compare the hundredths digit with 5. Use nearby values to explain why the rule works before using it as a shortcut.

About this practice

Each set contains six distinct original number-and-place questions with verified answers. Source numbers range from 1 through 90.99 and have at most two decimal places. Requests ask for the nearest whole number or tenth. The key may omit trailing zeros; equivalent values such as 14 and 14.0 are accepted.

Sets do not guarantee both rounding places or an exact midpoint. Rounding to hundredths, thousandths, and negative-number rounding are not included. Use the working space to write nearby values or sketch a number line.
