Reading Fraction Line Plot Worksheets
A fraction label tells the length. Each cross tells you one measurement was recorded at that length.
Read the fraction and the marks separately
The labels are 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 unit. They increase by one quarter each time. Half a unit is two quarters, and one whole unit is four quarters.
Three crosses above 1/2 mean three measurements of half a unit.
The fraction describes each length. The number of crosses describes how many times that length appears. Three crosses do not change the label to three units.
Count every measurement once
To find how many measurements there are altogether, count all the crosses. If the four stacks contain two, one, three, and two crosses, the total is eight measurements. Do not add the fraction labels to answer a counting question.
Find the smallest shown length
The smallest value on these plots is 1/4 unit. Find that label first and count the crosses directly above it. A shorter stack means fewer measurements, not a smaller length.
Keep a steady counting path
Count from the bottom of one stack to the top, then move to the next stack. Each × is one mark, even though it contains two crossing strokes. Touch each mark once.
Explain what the answer counts
Say “eight measurements” for a total count. That does not mean the total measured length is eight units. Adding all the lengths would require a different calculation and is not requested on this sheet.
About these four questions
Each sheet reuses two total-count questions and two questions about how many measurements have the smallest shown value. Every plot uses 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and 1, with one through three crosses at each value. All four values appear.
The original plots do not name inches or centimeters, so the caption uses length in units. This is selected reading practice, not measuring objects, drawing a new plot, reading absent categories, or adding fractional lengths. The original drawing and answers are retained.

Ask the child to point to a fraction label and explain how it differs from the count above it.
