How to teach it
Read the number words aloud and match each to a numeral and a small collection. Let the student draw the connecting lines.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
Try one match together: place five counters beside a card showing 5. Count the counters, say “five,” and show a second card with the word five. Explain that both cards name the same number.
Move the word card to a new position and ask the child to find it again. The match depends on the number name, not on which cards happen to be across from one another.

If your student needs help
If reading gets in the way, say the word without giving away its matching numeral.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask the child to show one matched number with counters or fingers. Check where each line begins and ends; a curved or crossing line can still be correct.
