How to teach it
Point to the given number on a number path and model one step back and one step forward.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
Start with a number path: write 1 through 9 on separate cards. Find 6. Touch the card immediately to its left: 5. Return to 6 and touch the card immediately to its right: 7.
Read the three numbers together: 5, 6, 7. The count changes by one at each step. Five goes in the Before box and seven goes in the After box.

Which number comes just before this one?
If your student needs help
If the student skips a number, count through a short part of the sequence together.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Read each completed row from left to right. Each step should increase by one. Use a number path to explain an answer before choosing a fresh set.
