How to teach it
Place the three strips at the same starting line. Have the student explain the order using their endpoints.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
Keep the labels with their strips.
A, B, and C identify the pictures; they do not tell you which strip is longest. Compare the right ends before writing any letters.
Ask your student
Would moving one strip forward change its actual length?
If your student needs help
If the student compares only the far ends, realign the starting ends first.
Choosing and using the worksheet
Each set contains two ordering tasks and two longest-strip tasks from the original bank. The strips have different lengths and aligned left ends. The original source places them in increasing or decreasing length from top to bottom; it does not generate every possible arrangement.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask why one strip belongs in the middle. Use its label to explain both shorter-than and longer-than comparisons.
