How to teach it

Establish the relationship between the units, then model how many smaller units make the larger amount.

Example to work through together

Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.

Ask your student

Will the number of units get larger or smaller? Why?

If your student needs help

If the student chooses the wrong operation, build one larger unit from its smaller units first.

Choosing and using the worksheet

Each sheet reuses four questions, one for each relationship above. Starting amounts are whole numbers from 2 through 9. Metric conversions stay within the metric system; feet to inches stays within the customary system.

Make a practice set

Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.

After your student finishes

Ask why the numerical answer grew even though the measured quantity stayed the same.
