Teaching notes for parents and teachers
How to teach it
Identify rectangular prisms, label their dimensions, and find each volume. Add the volumes after checking that every part is included once.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
One part measures 4 × 3 × 2 units, so its volume is 24 cubic units. Another measures 2 × 3 × 1, so its volume is 6. Together they have volume 30 cubic units.
Ask your student
Do any of our parts overlap?
If your student needs help
If a region is counted twice, color the separate prisms and match each to one calculation.
