Teaching notes for parents and teachers
How to teach it
Model a whole number divided into fraction-sized groups. Then model a unit fraction shared among a whole number of people.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
2 ÷ 1/4 = 8 because two wholes contain eight quarters. In contrast, 1/2 ÷ 3 = 1/6 because half a whole is split into three equal shares.
Ask your student
Are we counting pieces of a given size or finding the size of each share?
If your student needs help
If the student uses the same model for both, label the known group count or group size explicitly.
