Adding Three Numbers

Use three-addend problems to teach helpful grouping.

Teaching notes for parents and teachers

How to teach it

Model making ten with two addends, then add the third. Mark each original addend as it is used.

Example to work through together

Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.

6 + 3 + 4 = (6 + 4) + 3 = 10 + 3 = 13. Check that all three original addends were used once.

Ask your student

Which pair would make this addition easier?

If your student needs help

If an addend is lost or repeated, use three separate groups of counters and combine them visibly.
