Mark the original number between two possible rounded values. Connect the nearer endpoint to the place-value rule.

Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
Round 46,782 to the nearest thousand. The hundreds digit is 7, so the result is 47,000. To the nearest ten thousand, the result is 50,000.
