Compare consecutive terms and try the proposed operation on each pair. Discuss why a rule must fit more than the first change.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
For 4, 8, 12, 16, add 4 each time. The next terms are 20 and 24. In 3, 6, 12, 24, multiply by 2 instead.

If your student needs help
If it fails later, have the student revise the rule before extending the sequence.
