How to teach it
Identify each U.S. coin, then model counting on by its value. Begin with the larger values when that makes the count easier.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
A quarter, two dimes, and three pennies total 25 + 10 + 10 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 48 cents.

Why does a dime add ten to our total even though it is one coin?

If the student counts coins instead of cents, label each coin's value and add those labels.
