Multiplying Fractions

Use an area model to give meaning to fraction multiplication.

Teaching notes for parents and teachers

How to teach it

Shade one fraction of a rectangle, then a fraction of that shaded area. Count the overlap and connect it to multiplying numerators and denominators.

Example to work through together

Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.

2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. In a rectangle split into 12 equal parts, the overlapping region covers 6 parts.

Ask your student

What fraction of the whole rectangle is shaded both ways?

If your student needs help

If the student expects a larger result, compare the multiplier with one and discuss taking only part of an amount.
