Before You Begin

Teaching Steps for Parents and Teachers

  1. Find a common factor of the numerator and denominator.
  2. Divide both by that same factor. Continue until they have no common factor greater than 1.
  3. If the numerator is greater than the denominator, divide to write the result as a mixed number.

Worked Examples

Simplify 14/12 and write it as a mixed number.

  1. Divide both 14 and 12 by their common factor 2: 14/12 = 7/6.
  2. 7 ÷ 6 = 1 R 1, so 7/6 = 1 1/6.

Answer: 1 1/6
