Teaching Notes
Focus: Multiples of Ten × One Digit. Use the worked example and teaching sequence below to explain the reasoning before independent practice.
Before You Begin
- Read the numbers and identify the operation.
Teaching Steps for Parents and Teachers
- For an error-correction problem, find the first incorrect step. Explain why it is wrong, then recompute all later steps.
- Use known multiplication facts and place value together.
- Multiply the top number by each digit of the lower number, starting with the ones.
- Regroup when a product exceeds nine.
- If the lower number has more than one digit, write a separate partial product for each place and add the partial products.
- A tens digit represents tens, not ones.
Worked Examples
Evaluate 30 × 4.
- 30 × 4 = 120.
Answer: 120
Common Mistakes and How to Help
A partial product for the tens place must be shifted one place. Keep a carried amount separate from the next multiplication fact, then add it once.
Estimate using nearby convenient numbers. You can also divide the product by one factor to recover the other.
Questions to Check Understanding
- Estimate using nearby convenient numbers. You can also divide the product by one factor to recover the other.
- Which step explains your answer?
- Can you apply the same reasoning when the numbers change?
Practice Advice
Work through the example together. Ask the learner to explain the first two problems, then try three independently. Review the first incorrect step before assigning more practice.
Next Practice
- Use New Numbers to practice the same skill with different values.
- If the learner needs help, return to the example and model each step before trying again.
