Teaching Notes
Use the worked example and teaching sequence below to explain the reasoning before independent practice.
Before You Begin
- Recognize a unit cube.
Teaching Steps for Parents and Teachers
- Find how many cubes are in one complete layer.
- Count the equal layers, including hidden cubes.
- Multiply cubes per layer by the number of layers.
Worked Examples
A prism has 3 layers, each containing 4 rows of 2 cubes. Find its volume.
- One layer has 4 × 2 = 8 cubes.
- 3 × 8 = 24.
Answer: 24 cubic units
Common Mistakes and How to Help
Count hidden cubes in full layers, not just the visible faces.
Does length × width × height give the same count?
Questions to Check Understanding
- Does length × width × height give the same count?
- What in the numbers or diagram supports your answer?
Practice Advice
Work through the example together. Ask the learner to explain the first two problems, then try three independently. Review the first incorrect step before assigning more practice.
Next Practice
- Use New Numbers to practice the same skill with different values.
- If the learner needs help, return to the example and model each step before trying again.
