How to teach it
Start at the origin and move horizontally for the first number, then vertically for the second in these first-quadrant examples.
Example to work through together
Use the model below as you explain the example. Have your student point to the quantities as you discuss them.
(3, 2) means three units right from zero and two units up.
The first number is the x-coordinate. The second number is the y-coordinate.
Ask your student
What changes if we reverse the two numbers?
If your student needs help
If the student moves up first, trace the path from the origin and label the axes.
Make a practice set
Select the worksheet, answer key, or both. When both are selected, the answer key prints after the questions. Keep it separate if you want your student to work independently.
After your student finishes
Ask the child to explain what each coordinate tells them and retrace one answer from the origin.
