Before You Begin

Teaching Steps for Parents and Teachers

  1. Find the greatest multiple of the divisor that does not exceed the dividend.
  2. Subtract that multiple to find the remainder.
  3. Check that the remainder is smaller than the divisor.
  4. For a blank, identify the missing quantity. Substitute the completed value back into the original statement to check it.

Worked Examples

17 ÷ 5

  1. 5 × 3 = 15; 5 × 4 = 20 is too large.
  2. 17 − 15 = 2.
  3. 5 × 3 + 2 = 17.

Answer: 3 R 2

Common Mistakes and How to Help

A remainder at least as large as the divisor means another group can be made.

Check divisor × quotient + remainder = dividend.
